Sets of Linear Transformations

In this chapter we shall introduce some general concepts which are fundamental in the study of arbitrary sets of linear transformations. A deeper study of these notions belongs more properly to the so-called theory of representations of rings and is beyond the scope of the present volume. An introduction to these notions will serve to put into better perspective the results of the preceding chapter. We shall also be able to extend some of these results to sets of commutative linear transformations.
