Use of Decision Theory for Pattern Recognition in Geology

Abstract

Decision theory may be used in geology in situations where it is necessary to make a selection between alternatives. The single calculation of the risk function is based on (1) the matrix of a priori probabilities, (2) an experimental matrix, and (3) loss-matrix. Difficulties in the procedure can be minimized by using a method of “group calculation of arguments” (MGCA). A detailed description of the MGCA algorithm is given along with an example of a solution of a problem.
