Abstract

The ability of several bacteria or bacterial cell products to act as polyclonal B-cell activators (PBAs) is known for many years. Among bacterial PBAs active on human B cells, Staphylococcus aureus Cowan first strain (SAC) and its cell wall component, Staphylococcal protein A (SpA), is undoubtedly the most interesting one. In the first part of of this paper the mechanisms by which SAC bacteria activate human B cells are discussed. In the second part, data obtained by the application of SAC bacteria to the study of events involved in the induction of human B cells from the resting state to immunoglobulin (Ig)-secreting cells are reported.
