β-Lipotropin

  • László Gráf

Abstract

In 1964, Birk and Li1 reported the discovery of a new polypeptide of the pituitary gland. Because of the considerable lipolytic activity of this polypeptide on rabbit adipose tissue in vitro, Li2 named it lipotropic hormone (LPH) or lipotropin. Fourteen years later, when Dr. Li was asked about his reason for the designation, he explained3: “The designation of a new natural substance is often a matter of convenience. Lipotropic hormone had been named by me on the basis of its biological effect first observed. If the melanocyte-stimulating activity of lipotropin had been noticed first, it would have been called γ-me-lanotropin.”
