Abstract

In the past 15 years, since Richard N. Lolley wrote his inspiring overview of the retina in the first edition of this Handbook,1 the biochemical techniques used in retina research have become increasingly sophisticated and progressively more widespread, yielding many advances that have been reviewed elsewhere in considerable detail.2–16 In retinal neurochemistry, as in other areas of neurobiology, the need for a multidisciplinary approach has been recognized, and such approaches have been, in fact, applied. The current upsurge in interest in the retina is a result of two major factors: recent progress in vision science and the use of the retina as a model for the central nervous system.
