The Chemical and Immunologic Properties of the Basic A1 Protein of Myelin

Abstract

Myelin can be considered a simple prototype of a cellular membrane since it appears (42) on electron microscopy to be derived from the plasma membrane of the Schwann cell in the peripheral nervous system and the oligodendroglial cell in the central nervous system (CNS). Based on data (36) from x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, a repeating pattern was observed in myelin which was compatible with the unit membrane (bimolecular leaflet) concept of membrane structure originally proposed by Davson and Danielli (18).
