It is from some of the original work of Wiersma that the concept of identified neurons emerged. The idea that a single unique neuron could be repeatedly studied in different preparations was a milestone in the development of invertebrate neurophysiology and has resulted in extensive usage of invertebrate systems as models for studying vertebrate integrative mechanisms.
