The beginning and the end of the addiction to power
In our culture the pursuit of power is a strange phantasmagoria. Power is ugly. The exercise of power is scorned. The actual presence of power in all nooks and crannies of life is difficult to reconcile with this picture. What can we do about this descrepancy? Psychologists say that an individual will repress this ugliness and if he cannot do so, he will dream up all kinds of reasons why a given situation requires the exercise of power.
