Reflections on the work democratization project: the process of diffusion

Part of the International series on the quality of working life book series (IQWL, volume 1)

In the early 60’s we were concerned with testing whether and to what extent autonomous types of work organization which had been shown to be feasible in the British coal mining industry, were feasible in manufacturing industry. At the same time we expected that changes in this direction would:
  1. 1.

provide a way towards the democratization of working life at the shop floor level

  2. 2.

improve the quality of working life

  3. 3.

create organizations capable of functioning in non-stable environments

  4. 4.

be consistent with the increasing level of education of the population as a whole.
