Manufacture of inks and varnishes

The manufacture of printing inks is not a complicated process. Most printing inks consist of pigment dispersed into varnishes and manufacture is mainly concerned with the mechanical means of producing these dispersions efficiently, economically, reproducibly and, often, very quickly. Usually two techniques are employed, mixing and milling, which are briefly defined in respect of inks as follows.
