One afternoon in the fall of 1942, the darkest time of World War II for the United States, Uncle Will and Aunt Beth came chugging up in the old green Model A he’d had since I’d known him. It was no longer beautiful and lux-urious, though. The canvas top was ragged and torn, the body dented and rusty, and it had no muffler. In short, it wasn’t much more than a bucket of bolts.
