Definitions and objectives
The word seems to have first become popular when Karel Capek’s play, Rossum’s Universal Robot, was performed in France in the 1920s. In the play, small artificial and anthropomorphic creatures strictly obeyed their master’s orders. In Czech these creatures were called ‘robota’ (which is the Russian word for ‘work’).*
