Antigen-Specific Suppression of Antibody Responses by Class II MHC-Restricted CTL

Abstract

Mature T cells are known to be capable of suppressing immune responses in an antigen-specific manner. However the mechanism of suppression is not known. Despite many reports indicating the existence of “suppressor T cells” capable of secreting suppressor factors with affinity for native antigens, no evidence on a molecular level is available. Recent studies on class II-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) raised the possibility that such CTL might explain antigen-specific suppression of antibody responses by T cells. Thus, CTL might play a role in the regulation of immune responses as well as the elimination of pathological cells.
