Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity and Its Consequences
The Point of view that will be established in this chapter is that the special theory of relativity is a theory of measurement. The core of the theory can be understood as a modification of the Newtonian theory of measurement. It is important to emphasize that the Newtonian theory of measurement had been accepted long before Newton and was so much a part of the thinking of natural philosophers that Newton hardly discussed it and almost never referred to it. Yet the assumptions of that theory underlie the development of Newtonian mechanics and to an extent determine the meaning of the evidence that is gathered in support of the theory.
