In 1963 I brought to completion and published a book entitled Interpolation and Approximation. This book took six years from conception to birth. I acknowledge three of these years as my own, a legitimate period of gestation. The remaining three years were due to fouled-up circumstances. I did not, as Oscar Wilde once did, leave the manuscript absentmindedly in a cab between Picadilly and the Strand. My publisher was anxious to keep costs down and had the galleys set up in Northern Ireland. I used to receive the galleys in batches of twenty. After several months, halfway through the book, they stopped coming; the printers were on strike.
