Mechanism of Hearing and Subjective Rating

If one is concerned with noise control or noise reduction it is very useful to know something about the working of the human ear and how the brain interprets the signals sent to it by the hearing mechanism. Noise affects the hearing function of the ear in two ways: [1] it may cause permanent physical damage to the hearing mechanisms, rendering it insensitive to important components of sound, and [2] it may mask or drown out desirable sound. Further, annoyance is a highly subjective, unfavorable response to noise which interferes with human activity, or sense of wellbeing. For these reasons a knowledge of the working of the ear is most useful.
