Calculation and Design of Elevations for Stairs and Stair Parts
Measured on plan, the normal stride of a medium-sized person is between 70 and 75 cm long. This distance becomes shorter when one walks up or down an incline. Inclined surfaces (ramps) are relatively easy to negotiate up to an angle of about 15°. In this pitch range it is recommended, especially in gardens or other outdoor areas, where ice may occur, to install steps with horizontal or inclined treads.
