Implementing a System — Hardware and Software

  • Stanley Port

This chapter deals with the implementation of the hardware and software. First there is a brief explanation of the various CAD hardware elements and the manner in which these are configured into practical CAD systems. It will become more common for each user to sit at a workstation which includes its own powerful computer. Several of these workstations will however be linked into a data communications network. This is the concept of the distributed system. It is a configuration which seems likely to predominate in the future because it can provide management with far more flexibility. The network permits several users to share design data and provides access for users to shared equipment like a plotter or large disc store.
