Alcohol: Consequences on the Central Nervous System and Behavior

Abstract

Alcohol is most frequently used and thought of as a drug, and therefore its relevance to the study of nutrition and behavior may seem curious. However, alcohol does have nutritional value and profoundly affects the intake, absorption, digestion, and metabolism of many essential nutrients. These alterations in nutrient intake can have significant effects on behavior. In addition, research conducted over the past 20 years has demonstrated that chronic alcohol consumption during pregnancy can act as a potent teratogen, permanently altering a child’s CNS functioning and behavior.
