It once was thought that the receiving and stores functions were relatively unimportant, that anyone could work in these capacities. This kind of thinking led to poor supplier relationships, inaccurate inventory records, lost materials, unhappy customers, and other problems. Receiving and stores are vital to a well-run materials management program. The personnel within these groups must be educated, responsible, and capable individuals.
