Abstract

We noted earlier that the v86 mode is a 8086/88 mode emulated by the i386/i486 processor with the protected mode features. So it is possible to have paging, multitasking, and the protection mechanism supported in the v86 mode. A v86 mode task can be thought of as the 8086 program running in a i386/i486 machine under the control of a software interface which resides in the protected mode. The software interface supporting the v86 mode task is called a v86 monitor.
