Bonding to Prevent Sideflashes

  • Marvin M. Frydenlund

The subject of bonding metal bodies to prevent sideflashing (also called “flashover”) of current between them during lightning strikes has been a part of lightning protection code deliberations for generations. Early editions of the Lightning Protection Code NFPA 78 specified that “metal bodies of conductance” and “metal bodies of inductance” be bonded into the lightning protection conductor system when they were found to be located within 6 feet of a lightning protection system conductor.
