Conducting Lightning Current

  • Marvin M. Frydenlund

When the stepped leader stroke of a large-magnitude lightning flash reaches striking distance above a building or other targeted structure, the stage is set for the transfer of a huge mass of electrical energy. The entire trip from thundercell to earth takes place in microseconds. This places a large burden on the conductors that must convey the charge from strike point to earth level and to the grounding electrodes.
