Analysis of one form or another is an essential and inseparable part of chemistry. The examination of a new material, whether of mineral or organic origin, inevitably involves analytical procedures, as does the investigation of the products of a chemical change. Indeed, analysis of a kind certainly predated both chemistry and alchemy, as the practitioners of the early chemical technologies attempted to identify and quantify the materials with which they were concerned.
