Nitrogen cycling and human intervention

  • A. J. M. Schoot Uiterkamp

Abstract

Ever since Antoine Lavoisier, over 200 years ago, called the element nitrogen “azote” meaning “without life”, subsequent history has proved nitrogen and its compounds such as food, poisons, fertilizers and explosives to be anything but lifeless. Moreover if the bacterium Azotobacter were to “live up” to the literal meaning of its name, it would not exist and neither would perhaps conferences on nitrogen fixation!
