Planned release of genetically modified organisms: Scientific and regulatory issues

There is a great deal of excitement with the advent of recombinant DNA technology and biotechnology. These disciplines open up a Pandora of possibilities for genetically manipulating plants, animals, and microbes for release into the environment to be used as “work horses.” There is little doubt that these genetically engineered organisms will have potential impacts on physical, biological and human components of the environment. The potential effects have to be monitored and assessed in order that careful and prudent releases are conducted. Genetically engineered nitrogen fixing organisms are no exception.
