Limiting factors in symbiotic nitrogen fixation: Structure and dynamics of the Rhizobium genome

Abstract

In a broad context, the analysis of limiting factors in symbiotic nitrogen fixation should take into account all the elements that participate with either a positive or a negative role in the process and that may limit it at any stage. The survival of strains in the soil, the specific recognition between bacteria and plants, the selection of the most competitive bacteria to establish the interaction, the differentiation of both bacteria and plant cells with its intimate exchange of signals, the supply of energy to nitrogenase from dicarboxilate and aminoacid metabolism and finally the onset of nitrogen fixation resulting from a balanced interaction of regulatory circuits that sense nitrogen and carbon metabolism as well as oxygen concentration, are major events to be consider.
