Abstract

In this chapter, a factory model is defined as a representation of the flow of parts through a manufacturing facility by use of a digital computer. A factory is considered a manufacturing facility that has an, environment which is subject to a great deal of change. The sources of change include manufacturing engineering changes in the process flow variables, product changes due to marketing variables, product changes due to product engineering design variables, and changes brought about by the fact that people/machine systems are subject to the wide variety of unpredictable events inherent in the environment of the real world. From an analytical point of view this atmosphere of rapid change means that a solution to the problem of how to “best” plan and/or schedule a factory can be correct only for a very short period of time.
