Technology for Postsecondary Students with Learning Disabilities

Abstract

According to Aldous Huxley (1956), technological progress has merely provided mankind with a more efficient means of going backward. Evidently, Mr. Huxley did not have persons with disabilities in mind when he made this statement, for technology has enabled many persons with disabilities to take great strides forward in realizing their optimal potential and to become fully functioning and integrated members of our society. Technology has helped the visually impaired to read by means of optical character recognition, the hearing impaired to hear with hearing aids, the paralyzed to gain mobility through electronically controlled wheel chairs, and the nonspeaking to talk through speech synthesizers. This technology, when utilized to help persons with disabilities compensate for their difficulties, is referred to as “assistive technology.”
