Abstract
The development in microprocessor technology and computer science in the last ten years has caused substantial changes in process automation technology. Nowadays the new generation of decentralized process control systems which are sufficiently reliable and satisfy the requirements for high performance allows to an increasing extent the implementation of the so-called “higher automation functions”.
