Mental Models and Metaphors: Implications for the Design of Adaptive User-System Interfaces

This chapter addresses two main issues. The first grew out of the observation that there is no agreed-on terminology for the different aspects and connotations of “model” in human-computer interaction research. Investigating the concept of “model” led to some new distinctions and to a classification schema that accounts for all possible concepts and combinations of different models. Moreover, this classification has a number of implications for how to go about systems design, for example, of adaptive user-system interfaces, and of tutoring systems.
