Of the 8,500 or so bird species in the world the parrots have endeared themselves to man the longest. Not only have they existed for tens of millions of years, but they have also been kept as pets for as long as seafarers began returning from foreign lands. It is even said that a swarm of parrots had something to do with the discovery of America, as it made Columbus change his course.
