Managing Academic Committees

Abstract

Academic life involves participation in committees: membership on committees, chairing committees, and for administrators, deciding when to use and how to staff committees. Faculty members in major public and private universities report spending on average 17% of their professional time in committees and administrative work (1). The reaction of faculty members to this activity is uniform: they find it boring and burdensome. But the complexity of academic organizations makes committees essential devices for integrating specialized fields and activities.
