Professional Settings for the Academic Physician

The self-concept of the medical doctor contains archetypal memories of the individual professional. Although the vast majority of doctors carry out the practice of medicine as part of organized groups including private clinics, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), large group practices, and public health hospitals, the sense of independence and individuality is strong in the new medical graduate. Life in medical organizations and groups thereby presents new realities. These realities are most striking in academic medical organizations where new staff not only confront the obligations of organizational membership, but also confront the practice of new and untried skills in teaching and research.
