There can be few areas of engineering design where more ingenuity has been displayed than in that of hydraulic pumps. While internal combustion engines, for example, have tended to converge on a few preferred types, virtually all based on the crankshaft and piston-in-cylinder principle, high-pressure displacement pumps have proliferated forms, many of which have successfully occupied distinctive niches in the market. The field is rich in examples for the engineering designer, both of problems and of methods of solution.
