Pneumatic Quarter-turn Actuators

A good example of design is provided by pneumatic quarter-turn actuators. These devices use compressed air at a gauge pressure of up to about 7 bar to turn valves through 90°: the valves in question are usually ball valves in which a sphere with a hole in it can be rotated about a diameter so that it allows the free passage of fluid or completely blocks the flow. The actuators come in many different kinds and sizes and are extensively used in the chemical and process industries. Much ingenuity has been displayed in designing them for low cost and high reliability.
