In Chapter 3 the design of the joints that have to be made in connecting rod big ends was considered. In large marine engines there is an added complication because the crank pins are large and there is a need to withdraw the connecting rod through the cylinder, thus limiting its lateral extent. Figure 10.1 illustrates the problem, and shows different forms of split line, or strictly, split surface, between the two parts of the big end which have been adopted to solve it.
