Appendix I: The Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS)
The Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) is a scanning radiometer which views the ocean in six coregistered spectral bands, five in visible and near infrared (443, 520, 550, 670, and 750 nm), and the sixth, a thermal infrared band (10.5–12.5 μm). The satellite is in a sun-synchronous orbit with ascending node near local noon. The sensor has an active scan of 78° centered on nadir, and a field of view of 0.0495°, which from a nominal height of 955 km, produces a ground resolution of 825 m. The scanning is accomplished through the use of a rotating mirror. When the sensor is viewing at nadir the normal to the mirror lies in the plane formed by nadir and the direction of motion of the spacecraft and makes an angle of 45° with each. To minimize the effect of direct sun glint the sensor is equipped with a provision for tilting the scan mirror in such a manner that the angle the mirror normal makes with nadir can be varied by ± 10° in 1° increments. This has the effect of tilting the scan plane through ± 20° in 2° increments. A secondary effect of this tilting is a widening of the 1600 km swath to 2300 km when the scan plane is tilted north by 20°, and a narrowing of the swath to 1300 km when the scan plane is tilted 20° to the south.
