The mathematical symbols used in this book are in common usage in the literature dealing with the quantitative aspects of pharmacology and, for the most part, conform to standard mathematical usage. In our choice of variables, however, we preferred, in some instances, to use single letter symbols such as x, y, and E as variables, rather than the more descriptive symbols such as “conc.” (for concentration), “vol” (for volume), “Eff” (for effect), etc. Our usage was dictated by a desire to reduce the bulk of notation in situations in which there was some reasonable amount of manipulation.
