Abstract

Even in ancient Greece, about 2,000 years ago more than 500 different species of animals were known, and by the middle of the 19th century their number had reached several hundred thousand. At the present time the number of known species of animals and microorganisms exceeds two million. According to the calculations of Soviet entomologist N. N. Bogdanov-Kot’kov more than 68,000 different insects can inflict damage on man, domestic animals, plants, and a variety of materials. The number of different injurious microorganisms and plants is no less. Animals and microorganisms cause especially great damage to agriculture. It has been accurately determined that in agriculture not less than a third of the crop is lost because of pests and diseases, and if they were not systematically controlled, the loss would be even greater. Thus, according to the calculations of specialists, if the diseases and pests of agricultural crops are not systematically controlled, then at best not more than 37% of a normal harvest of potatoes can be gathered, not more than 22% of cabbage, 10% of appless, 9% of peaches, etc.
