The embryonic ectoderm (fig. 1) begins to differentiate about the 2nd month and gives rise to the periderm, then to the epiderm in two layers. Hair follicles appear about the 3rd month (fig. 2). After this stage melanoblasts, responsible for pigmentation of the skin, come in from the neural crest.
