Abstract

While this book was in press, an event occurred that could not be ignored. This was the chess match between the computer at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) at Moscow and the computer at Stanford University (Palo Alto, California, USA), which ended in a 3 to 1 victory for Moscow. Before discussing it, I must make a few preliminary remarks about management systems.
