Atlas of Atomic Emission Spectral Lines
This section was included in this book essentially for the sake of completeness. Dr. P. T. Gilbert Jr. has prepared such an atlas for most elements which emit in air-hydrogen, oxyhydrogen, and oxyacetylene flames. His compilation appears in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (Footnote 4, Table 4), and many of the data in this atlas are taken from that reference; however, the format has been rearranged to conform more closely to the format of Section I. The relative intensities are inclusive for each element in this section. Gilbert’s data are essentially complete for oxyhydrogen and air-hydrogen flames; however, some of his data for oxyacetylene flame have been updated, with the appropriate reference given. Essentially all the update work was by Dr. Fassel’s group (Footnote 5, Table 4). Mavrodineanu and Boiteux (Footnote 5, Table 4) have done extensive work with the air-acetylene flame. Unfortunately, they chose to use spectrographic plates rather than photoelectric detection, and their data will not necessarily correlate as well as those from the other workers.
