Early Approaches to Production, Analysis, and Use of Steroid-Specific Antisera

We feel compelled to begin this presentation on a rather personal note. It is now a decade since we carried out studies on the antigenicity of estrone-protein conjugates, studies which neither of us, probably to our regret, continued subsequently (Goodfriend and Sehon, 1958, 1960, 1961a, 1961b; Goodfriend et al., 1961). Ten years is a rather long time for a study to lie dormant in one’s head, and unfortunately no new data are produced with increase in time of this kind of incubation! While we feel flattered to have been asked to participate in this meeting in spite of these circumstances, because of them we shall have to circumscribe our contribution within the narrow limits of an historic summary of these early experiments. Nevertheless, we shall try to improve matters by referring as frequently as possible to the extensive and very beautiful investigations of an array of steroid-protein conjugates, which were concurrently and independently carried out by Dr. Lieberman and his associates at Columbia University (Erlanger et al., 1957, 1959; Beiser et al., 1959; Lieberman et al., 1959). We would like to stress here how very aware we are of the fact that the work of the Columbia group has been largely instrumental in stimulating the proliferation of studies on steroid-specific antibodies, as witness the proceedings of this symposium.
