Abstract

There are many pitfalls in trying to correlate chemical changes in the nervous system with a particular behavioral experience, such as learning. First, there is a tremendous uncertainty concerning the amount of information that is stored in the nervous system. This can be estimated by the performance of the animal, but unfortunately performance factors such as the physical condition and the emotional state of the animal at the time of testing can interfere greatly with such an assay. It is thus almost impossible a priori to relate the amount of performance with the amount of information stored, and then to expect a quantitative relationship to exist between the amount stored and the chemical changes that might be observed.
