Abstract

The future of the universe depends on whether the present expansion is slowing down and whether, eventually, the gravitational forces acting inward will overcome the kinetic energy induced in the primordial mass by the explosion of the fireball which has given the universe the push of its expansion outward. If this is the case, the expansion of the universe will eventually stop, initiating an accelerating contraction. All of this depends on the density and the total mass of the universe.
