The agglutination reaction between bacteria and erythrocytes has been known for almost a century. However, only recently this reaction was found to be associated with the presence of surface structures called adhesins facilitating interaction of a pathogen with a host receptor1. While in noninvasive enteropathogens the association of adhesins with the ability to agglutinate erythrocytes has clearly been demonstrated, in invasive enteropathogens particularly in Shigella species such association deserves to be confirmed by more experimentation and data. We have studied the ability of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 isolated from the stool of patients with dysentery to agglutinate mammalian erythrocytes. In the present paper we describe the role of lipopolysaccharide in the haemagglutination reaction.
