Considerations in the Selection of Environmental Biotechnology as Viable in Field-Scale Waste Treatment Applications

Abstract

Environmental biotechnology is a technology with increasing potential for use in degrading toxic contaminants in water and soil media at hazardous waste sites. The term biotechnology encompasses a number of approaches in utilizing microorganisms to degrade contaminants both above ground and in situ. Some of the technology’s applications are well understood with extensive field data such as biological land treatment of some petroleum wastes. On the other hand, others such as microbial degradation of PCBs in soil are in the initial stages of field experimentation.
