Abstract

The boundary layer of 3He on graphite has shown properties of a two-dimensional ferromagnet. Both, in the cases of 3He filling pores of Grafoil and with a few monolayers, magnetization far in excess of the Curie value are observed at millidegree temperatures. Our experiments on the low-field NMR spectra of the 3He boundary layers in filled pores show collective modes for T < 1 mK. One of these modes extrapolates to nonzero frequency and amplitude as the field is dropped to zero. The Heisenberg symmetry is broken by the weak dipolar energy. This dipolar energy and finite size effects allow for order in zero field and finite temperature.
