Streptomyces strains show a high degree of instability. This manifests itself in the occurrence of variants which have lost the ability to produce aerial mycelium and spores, pigments, antibiotics, to form argininosuccinate synthetase or to utilise certain amino acids as a nitrogen source. Variants which are sensitive or resistant to various antibiotics can be easily isolated.
